A Beit

This artwork is an ongoing project depicting concepts of home through exploring themes around diaspora language, sound and colour. “Race is a text (an array of discursive practices) not an essence. It must be read with painstaking care and suspicion not embedded (Henry Louis Gates)”.While Coptic identity is a common theme in my artwork, I chose to use the emotions I felt  from ongoing feelings of displacement. In making the artwork I made two skylines of Toronto reflecting off of eachother. One skyline filled the shapes with lines/specific patterns while the other filled the shape of the skyline with text. I chose to use words relevant to my upbringing in Toronto, this included Arab phrases and physical pieces of literature. The following is a sound that is accompanying a work named a beit which was exhibited in April 2023.
